The Honest Answer

Can My Problem Wait Until Morning?

This is general guidance to help you decide, not confirmation that your situation is safe. If damage is continuing, sewage is overflowing, you can smell gas, there is any electrical danger, or you're not sure, get urgent qualified help now rather than waiting. We don't attend overnight.

Get help tonight if… Don't wait for morning

  • You can smell gas, at any strength: everyone outside, then Jemena on 131 909 from a safe distance. Strong smell or hissing: 000
  • Water keeps flowing after the meter is off: Sydney Water on 13 20 90 can tell you whose side it is
  • Sewage is overflowing and doesn't stop with your water off: Sydney Water on 13 20 90, and if it's your pipes you'll need an emergency plumber tonight
  • Water is in or around the switchboard, or near live power you can't switch off safely: stay clear, Endeavour Energy on 131 003, or 000 if there is immediate danger
  • Anyone is hurt, unwell or in danger: 000
  • You're not sure what's happening or whether it's getting worse: treat it as urgent

A morning appointment may suit if… Book a 7 a.m. appointment

  • The leak has stopped now the water's off at the tap or meter, and it stays stopped
  • No hot water, but the cold still runs
  • A drain is slow or gurgling but still draining, with nothing coming back up
  • A tap is dripping or a toilet keeps running, and you've isolated it or caught it in a bucket
  • The hot water unit is leaking but it's isolated, outside, and not spraying hot water
  • Check again before bed: if anything changes, use the numbers on the left

Make It Safe Till Morning

How to Turn Things Off

Where each shut-off usually is, what to turn, and the sign that means get help tonight instead. Plumbers on the tools from 7 a.m.

General guidance only. This page doesn't replace a licensed tradesperson or emergency services, and following it doesn't confirm your situation is safe. If you're unsure, or anything keeps getting worse, use the emergency numbers below or call 000 for immediate danger.

Water

At the meterUsually at the front boundary near the footpath, under a small lid or beside the tap in the garden. Units: often a bank of meters near the driveway.

  1. Turn the tap next to the meter clockwise until it stops. Don't force a seized one; use the isolation tap on the fixture instead.
  2. Can't find it or can't reach it? Most toilets and sinks have a small isolation tap on the wall pipe. Clockwise is off.
  3. Open a cold tap inside for a few seconds to drop the pressure, then close it. The leak should slow, then stop. If it doesn't, the problem may not be on your side.

Get help tonight instead if: Water still flowing with the meter off may be on Sydney Water's side of the connection. Ring 13 20 90 any time and they'll help work out whose pipe it is.

Gas

At the meter or bottleNatural gas: a lever or wheel on the pipe into the meter, usually on the side of the house. LPG: the hand wheel on top of each bottle.

  1. Natural gas: turn the lever a quarter turn so the handle sits across the pipe, not along it. A wheel valve turns clockwise.
  2. LPG bottles: turn the hand wheel clockwise until it's firm. Do both bottles if you have two.
  3. Leave it off. Never test whether gas is off by trying to light an appliance. We check everything and restore gas when we come.

Get help tonight instead if: Any smell of gas: don't use switches, phones or flames in the area, get everyone outside, then call Jemena on 131 909 from a safe distance. Strong smell, hissing or anyone feeling unwell: call 000.

Electricity

At the switchboardThe meter box or switchboard, usually on an outside wall or in the garage or hallway. Circuits are labelled; the main switch is the big one.

  1. If water is near a power point, light fitting or appliance, and the switchboard itself is dry and you can reach it safely, switch that circuit off. Not sure which one? Turn off the main switch.
  2. Never touch a switchboard, switch or appliance that is wet, with wet hands, or while standing in water. If the switchboard is wet, don't approach it at all.
  3. Leave the circuit off until the area is dry and a licensed electrician has checked it. A safety switch that keeps tripping is telling you something.

Get help tonight instead if: Water in or around the switchboard, sparks, a burning smell or a wet power point you can't switch off: stay clear, keep others away, call Endeavour Energy on 131 003, or 000 if anyone is in immediate danger.

Hot Water System

At the unitThe tank on the outside wall, in a cupboard or the garage. Look for the cold-water pipe going in, with a tap on it, and the relief valve pipe that drips.

  1. Turn the cold-water inlet tap on the pipe into the unit clockwise. That stops it filling and takes the pressure off the leak.
  2. Electric: switch off the hot water circuit at the switchboard (only if the board is dry). Gas: turn the gas isolation valve beside the unit off. Solar or heat pump: both.
  3. Stand clear. The water inside is hot. A slow drip from the relief pipe is normal; a steady stream or water from the tank body is not.

Get help tonight instead if: Can't isolate the unit safely, or hot water is spraying? Keep clear and turn the water off at the meter instead. A tank leaning or lifting: keep everyone away from it.

Sewer & Drains

Inside the houseGurgling, slow drains, a toilet that won't go down or sewage at the overflow gully in the yard. The first step is to stop putting water into it.

  1. Stop using water: no flushing, showers, washing machine or dishwasher. Every litre you put down can come straight back up.
  2. Keep kids and pets away from the overflow area, and don't pour chemicals down the drain; they can make the problem worse and the clean-up more hazardous.
  3. Sewage on the footpath or public land is usually Sydney Water's network. Ring 13 20 90 and report it.

Get help tonight instead if: Sewage still rising with all your water off: ring Sydney Water on 13 20 90 and they'll tell you whether it's their network. If it's your pipes and it won't stop, you need an emergency plumber tonight; we don't attend overnight.

Contain the Water

Wherever it's landedOnce the supply is off, the job is to stop the water spreading and move what matters out of the way. Ten minutes now can save days of drying out.

  1. Buckets under drips, towels at the edges, lift rugs and move electronics, cords and anything timber off the wet floor.
  2. Open windows or doors to get air moving. Don't run heaters or fans on wet carpet, and keep cords out of the water.
  3. Take photos for insurance and note where the water first appeared. Tell us when you book; it saves time in the morning.

Get help tonight instead if: A ceiling bulging or sagging with water in it: stay out from under it. Storm water coming in: ring the SES on 132 500. Water rising around power or anyone at risk: 000.

Can't find a tap or valve? The water meter and the isolation taps are the ones that matter, and the guide above covers where they usually live. Or call 1300 707 059: after hours an automated line takes your details and your request for a morning appointment.

Fixed price, then fixed

We find the fault, give you one fixed price before any work starts, and sort it on the spot in most cases. $0 call-out, always.

Local Knowledge

Morning Appointments Across Wollongong & the Illawarra

Our first vans are at customers' doors from 7 a.m., and from our Woonona base Bulli, Corrimal and Fairy Meadow are usually among the first doors we knock on, with Dapto and the Shellharbour side not far behind. Book overnight and choose an available morning time.

Most of what we see first thing is a burst flexi hose that was turned off at the tap at midnight, a hot water system that quit before the school run, or a drain that finally gave up. Usually fixable on the first visit, and cheaper for having been made safe the night before. The person who confirms your booking in the morning is part of the same local crew that turns up.

Questions

Questions People Ask at Midnight

What counts as 'first thing'?

Morning appointments from 7 a.m. The online booking shows the times actually available, and the 7 a.m. slot is subject to availability. We confirm the booking and ring before we're on our way.

Does booking overnight cost more?

No. The fixed price for a job is the same whether you book at 11pm or 11am. There's no call-out fee and no booking fee. You approve the price before any work starts, and if the problem sorts itself out overnight, ring 1300 707 059 any hour and cancel at no charge.

What if it gets worse during the night?

We don't attend overnight. If damage is continuing, sewage is overflowing, you smell gas, there's an electrical hazard, or you're unsure, get urgent help now rather than waiting: Sydney Water on 13 20 90, Jemena on 131 909, Endeavour Energy on 131 003, and 000 for anything life-threatening. If your own pipes need urgent work tonight, you'll need an emergency plumber who attends at night. Otherwise ring 1300 707 059 any hour: after hours an automated line takes your details, and from 7 a.m. the team picks it up.

Do you come out at night?

No. We're a 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. crew, and we'd rather say that plainly than promise a 2am van we don't run. What is open all night is the booking: online, or on 1300 707 059, where after hours an automated line takes your details and your request for a morning appointment. The guide on this page helps you decide whether waiting until morning is reasonable; it can't make that decision for you.

Do I have to be home in the morning?

Someone needs to be there to let us in, show us where the problem is and approve the fixed price before we start. If that's a partner, parent or neighbour, that's fine, just put their name and number on the booking.

I'm renting. Can I book?

Sorry, we can't assist renters directly. Your landlord or property manager needs to book the job. For something you've made safe for the night, send them this page and have them book the morning appointment. Once they've booked, we get moving.

I've turned the water off. Can't it just wait till the weekend?

You can, but a house without water for days is hard going, and water that got into walls, under floors or into a ceiling keeps doing damage while it sits. Mould can start within a couple of days. A morning appointment gets the water back on and the damage stopped, usually in one visit.

How do I know the gas is actually off?

At the meter the handle sits across the pipe when it's off; on LPG bottles the hand wheel is firmly closed. Never test by trying to light an appliance. If you smell gas at any point, treat it as live: everyone outside, no switches, phones or flames in the area, and ring Jemena on 131 909 from a safe distance; they take gas leak reports any time. Jemena's gas safety page has the same steps. We only restore gas and relight appliances once everything has been tested.

Book a 7 a.m. Appointment. Then Rest.

Choose an available morning time, run the checklist and get some rest. We're on the tools from 7 a.m., and your plumber rings before heading over. Sunny says: a problem booked is a problem half sorted.

Online bookings open 24/7. Plumbers on the tools 7 a.m.–5 p.m. 7 a.m. appointments subject to availability. $0 call-out, fixed price before work starts.
