Straight Answer

Repair the Line or Replace It?

Small leaks and fittings can often be repaired. Old corroded pipework can't be trusted. Here's how we call it.

Repair makes sense if… Usually same-day

  • The leak is at a single joint, valve or appliance connection
  • The pipework is copper or modern approved line in good condition
  • A pressure test passes once the fitting is replaced
  • The appliance itself is sound and just needs reconnecting

Replace the line if… Safe for decades

  • The pipework is old galvanised steel showing rust
  • Multiple leaks show up on the pressure test
  • The line runs through areas that now fail current standards
  • You're adding appliances and the old line can't carry the load

Local Knowledge

Gas Fitting Across Wollongong & the Illawarra

Most of Figtree, Keiraville and the older Wollongong suburbs are on Jemena's natural gas network, so a new cooktop or heater point is usually a matter of sizing the run from the meter. Out towards Shellharbour and Albion Park plenty of homes are still on LPG bottles, which changes the regulator and the appliance jets but not the standard the job is done to.

Every gas job in NSW must be done by a licensed gasfitter and finished with a certificate of compliance lodged with Fair Trading. That certificate is what your insurer and any future buyer will ask for. If you're replacing a gas storage unit, our hot water page covers the repair-or-replace call; if you can smell gas right now, turn the meter off and ring our emergency line.

Our gasfitters are the same local crew that does your plumbing, so a kitchen renovation gets one visit, not two trades.

Questions

Good to Know Before You Call

Are you licensed to do gas work?

Yes. Gas fitting in NSW must be done by a licensed gas fitter, and every job we do is tested and certified under our licence (No. 489163C). You receive a compliance certificate.

I can smell gas, what should I do?

Turn the gas off at the meter or bottle, open windows, don't use switches or flames, and call us. Suspected leaks are treated as emergencies.

Can you convert my appliance between natural gas and LPG?

Often, yes, many cooktops and heaters have conversion kits. We'll check the model, convert it if it's approved, and re-commission it.

How long does a new gas point take?

Most single points, such as a cooktop or BBQ bayonet, are done in a few hours in one visit. Longer runs or multiple appliances may take a day.

Do I need a compliance certificate?

Yes, for any new or altered gas work in NSW. We issue it on completion, insurers, landlords and buyers will ask for it.

Do you supply the appliance too?

We can connect an appliance you've bought, or supply and install one for you. Either way we commission it and certify the work.

What does the compliance certificate actually cover?

It records that a licensed gasfitter installed or repaired the work, tested it for leaks and found no defects. In NSW the certificate must be issued within five business days and a copy lodged with Fair Trading; you keep one copy. The NSW Government gasfitters page explains the rules. We issue it on the day and email you the copy.
